When exposed to sunlight or artificial light, the rotor turns inside this sealed glass bulb.

The rotor has four vanes that are mounted on a low-friction spindle.

Each vane has one blackened side and one silvered side.

The rotor turns because of the differential heating of the black and silvered vanes.
