Modeling Kidney Function Kit

Students construct a model of a kidney using a semipermeable membrane to filter a completely safe solution which simulates blood. The resulting blood solution contains simulated cells which can not cross the semipermeable membrane, remaining in the kidney model.

The resulting filtrate resembles urine, which students test for salt and other waste products.

The simulated blood cells can also be seen and counted under a microscope - just like real blood!

Your students will:

  • Investigate the function of a human kidney by constructing a model
  • Understand the mechanism of urine formation in the kidney
  • Observe osmosis as it relates to kidney filtration
  • Relate kidney function to homeostasis

Includes enough materials for a class size of 40 students.  Recommended for students in grades 7 through 10.   Manufactured by Neo/SCI.
